Background: Cao Weining is an orphan from Qing Feng Sword / Gentle Wind Sword Sect. His Sect is well respected and its leader powerful. The Sect Leader is Weining's master and he has a warm familial relationship with his martial uncle and senior martial brother. He is one of the representatives sent to the Heroes conference showing he is well regarded in his Sect.

In the show, he encounters the main characters which changes his trajectory in life. Soon, he becomes very loyal to Gu Xiang who he falls in love with at first sight. He frequently joins up with her and the main protagonists before he must return to his sect and brings Gu Xiang with him. She is taken in with his sect and treated well as she is Weining's betrothed. Shortly after they arrive back at his Sect, they come under attack. Weining brings Gu Xiang with him as they find many slaughtered and then retreat to a cave hideout.

Weining defends Gu Xiang and remains loyal to her as she comes under suspicion. Soon after, he finds that she has been lying about important matters to him but he accepts that and they decide to elope. Once they are able to leave the hideout they return to find Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu. Weining goes against his Sect to marry Gu Xiang and the ceremony is held in Ghost Valley.

Shortly before the ceremony, Qing Feng Sword Sect arrives and Cao Weining is immediately assassinated when he refuses to call off the wedding.

Personality:

Cao Weining is very loyal. He falls in love with Gu Xiang at first sight and from that moment on he is utterly loyal to her. He goes out of his way to help her any chance that arises and offers his assistance and company whenever he sees her. Even when she tries to push him away he is steady in his support of her. His loyalty is also to his sect and ends up being misplaced. When his Sect arrives in Ghost Valley for his wedding he believes they have come to accept his marriage but he is asked to turn away from Gu Xiang. It takes a great deal of courage to turn away from his sect's wishes and choose his love and he loses his life, still trying to believe the best of his sect who had come to destroy those Weining cared about.

Weining is compassionate and generous. Weining cares very deeply for what is right and helping those in need. He wants to protect those he cares about even once he realizes that they can generally take care of themselves without his help. He is generous in his affection but also in giving food and money or whatever is necessary to help those in need. He wants to make people happy and will go out of his way to do so.

Trust is another double-edged sword for Weining. Both Gu Xiang and his master betray his trust. He does not suspect that anyone would have ulterior motives and his trust makes him very gullible. He cannot conceive that Gu Xiang would lie to him about her master or that she would have ulterior motives for getting close to him. When his Sect arrives in Ghost Valley he has no suspicion it could be for anything other than to celebrate his matrimony. He welcomes them without question instead of even having an inkling to question their motives could be untoward.

While Weining is gullible and naive he is not stupid. He is able to figure out with Gu Xiang that his master has the pieces of Glazed Armor. When Gu Xiang tells him the truth about her identity and her master's he does not believe she is working against him or his sect. She's not a spy for an enemy despite her lies and her intentions are not evil and her care for him was not an act.

Lastly, Weining can be a pushover. He's easily overcome by assertive people and will back down to their will or ideas unless he is completely sure he is right about something.
